Wayne has always believed that the people employed at The Bakery are the key to our success.

Every member of staff is valued and we are always keen to encourage development and to provide relevant training to ensure that their skills are kept up to date.

We worked with the National Skills Academy for Food & Drink to guarantee our training provider could deliver relevant training for our specific baking requirements.

These are some of our recent training achievements and new courses that we are involved with:

  • Diploma in Management Studies with Huddersfield University.
  • Leadership and Management for supervisors and managers at Levels 2 and 3 with Barnsley College.
  • City & Guilds Proficiency in Industrial Baking Level 2 with Sheffield College.
  • EAL Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Maintenance (QCF) with AMRC, (Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre). We have employed new staff on this 3 year apprenticeship course.
  • We have also been busy rolling out courses across the workforce in Manual Handling and Kinetics, Equal Opportunities legislation and supervisory and communication skills.

To sustain a forward moving Company we are always reviewing our training options to develop the skills and knowledge of our entire workforce.

We incorporate the Stronger Together message with the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) basecode as a specific training programme for employees and induction for new appointments.

We ensure that our agency worker providers demonstrate full commitment to Stronger Together.

From starting with a rolling pin, scone cutter and a desire to succeed Wayne has propelled Haywood & Padgett from a small rented unit to become the world’s largest manufacturer of scones.

Along the way there have been trials and tribulations but a drive to grow and continually improve the business coupled with hard work and commercial acumen have overcome all of these.

Today Wayne is still based at the Bakery in Barnsley and along with his wife Michelle, daughter Becky and son Luke have turned Haywood & Padgett in to a true family business.

Wayne has always believed that his staff are his greatest asset and has treated them accordingly. The number of long serving members of staff and the atmosphere at The Bakery certainly pay testament to this. When called upon to do so Wayne will still don his whites and help out in the Bakery – he just doesn’t have to use the rolling pin these days!

During his well-earned time away from the business Wayne is committed to keeping fit and healthy – which is great news for Scone Lovers around the world!

Michelle
Padgett

Director

They say that behind every great man is a great woman but Michelle and Wayne have stood side by side though 27 years of marriage and the building of the Haywood & Padgett business. Michelle has been involved with the family business from the start and has seen it grow, along with her family, as she and Wayne have four children together.

To this day, Michelle remains an active member of Haywood & Padgett and particularly enjoys the New Product Development process. Michelle’s intuition for the next trend is second to none and her eye for design ensures that we not only have great products but great packaging too.

When away from the business Michelle is passionate about fitness, loves shopping and ensures that Wayne is kept in check!

Rebecca
Padgett

Director

Becky officially joined Haywood & Padgett in 2009 after growing up around the business.

Keen to understand every element of how Haywood & Padgett works Becky started at the bottom and was determined to work in departments throughout the family business. This has given Becky an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Bakery and gained her the respect of everyone.

Not content with working long hours and weekends, Becky is also undertaking studies at Huddersfield University to compliment the practical experience that she has gained. With all this hard work, we all know that the future of the family business is secure.

Mark
Smith

Bakery Manager

Back in the summer of ’96 Mark started a temporary job with Haywood & Padgett as a Packing Operative and thankfully he is still here – although not in the same position.

Mark’s leadership and organisational skills were soon noticed and it wasn’t long before he was promoted to Shift Supervisor. The ink was barely dry on the contract before Mark made the quickest promotion in the company’s history to become Shift Manager.

The inevitable eventually happened and Mark is now the Bakery Manager working the long hours necessary to keep the nations shelves full of our fantastic scones.

We don’t know where he finds the time but Mark still puts on his football boots to give his midfield masterclass each week. However, we have learnt not to ask the score on a Monday morning unless he is smiling!

Paul
Kidd

Technical / Quality Manager

A long serving member of the team; Paul has been with Haywood & Padgett for over 15 years.

With more than 20 years’ experience in Technical and Quality Management Paul has had a huge input at Haywood & Padgett. His dedication has ensured that we have the systems in place to maintain the highest standards possible and to consistently bake the delicious scones that the nation treasures.

After his daily bicycle commute Paul loves nothing more than donning his whites and getting on to the bakery floor where the magic happens!

Andy
Pearcy

Company Accountant

Since Quarter 3 in 2015 Andy has been the chief ‘bean counter’ at Haywood & Padgett and quickly developed an impressive reputation in what is a new industry to him.

Following University, Andy has worked in Practise, been an auditor, worked for international fashion brands and been a hot shot in London. Luckily for us he has been able to bring all of that knowledge with him, which has been invaluable with the growth that we are experiencing.

When not thinking about scones, Andy can be found training for his favourite event the Triathlon or trying not to be a competitive dad when cheering on his son at football.

Ian
Hemingway

Commercial Manager

A recent recruit to the Haywood & Padgett family, Ian has returned to his roots by coming back to work in Barnsley.

After several years of working in various manufacturing industries outside of Yorkshire it is great to have repatriated him!

With a strong track record in Sales and Commercial Management you will find him in his natural habitats; either on the road visiting customers or in the office with his head in a spreadsheet.

Tim
Steele

Logistics Manager

Another of the team with a long serving history at Haywood & Padgett, Tim started 18 years ago, as a Warehouse Operative. Tim’s talents were obvious from the start and he quickly moved through the ranks to become Warehouse and Logistics Manager.

Working in tandem with Mark, our Bakery Manager, Tim ensures we bake and transport millions of scones every day to keep the nation stocked up on their favourite treats.

As well as being our Logistics Guru Tim is our sporting hero too. He is the former Barnsley and District Doubles Snooker Champion – his playing partner – Wayne Padgett of course!

John Mason &
Ann Cripwell Smith

New Product Development Team

Doctor John, as we like to call him, is in his second tenure at Haywood & Padgett where his expertise is continually in demand to produce the next great bakery delight for our customers to enjoy.
With over 30 years’ experience in the food industry there isn’t much that John doesn’t know about how to produce the perfect product and he has been responsible for some of our most successful ranges.
Our resident authority on fitness John doesn’t worry when he can’t cycle the 30-mile round trip to the Bakery, he just runs it instead!

For the last 20 years Ann, has been at the forefront of Product Development in the Food Industry and luckily for us the last 5 years have been at Haywood & Padgett.
Ann’s passion for new product development is legendary and her networking and industry connections mean that she is always in touch with the market and upcoming trends.
When Ann is not winning Quality Food Awards for her scones she is happiest volunteering for the local community or fooling about on the water – in her dinghy!

Diane
Jepson

Human Resources Manager

In 2012 when we needed a new H.R. Manager we were determined to find the best and were extremely lucky to do so when we found Diane. Over 22 years Diane had forged an impressive career in Business Management and Recruitment with South Yorkshire Police and then taken the skills to be a General Manager with the RSPCA.

Since arriving with us Diane has not only overseen the growth of personnel at Haywood & Padgett, which has been a big job due to our impressive growth, but also won awards for her work and has plans for even more!

Outside of work Diane loves nothing more than visiting the moors to walk with her dogs and she even lets her husband go too!

Ingram

Senior Account Manager & Buyer

For almost a decade Lee has been driving sales at Haywood & Padgett and is known by the retailers as the “Scone man”.

His tenacity and knowledge of the industry has also helped him cross the divide from Sales to include Buying in his role as well.

Although originally from the South we are pleased to call him an honorary Northerner!
